Do you know your value, your ‘ true value’ that you get to employers? And importantly do you communicate it effectively to them (your current as well as prospective employers)?
If yes, then your career should be progressing on a fast track.
If not, then you need to focus on identifying and building your value and marketing it to employers.
How does one demonstrate value? You may ask.
To give you an idea, value is when you have made contributions on the following lines:
A] Saved the company, money or time
B] Improved turn around time (TAT)
C] Improved and streamlined processes and employees are happy
D] Increased revenues and / or profits
E] Set goals and motivated teams to achieve them
F] Trained teams in developing new skills
G] Come up with new concepts creatively
Let me offer you 3 starting points for you to identify and demonstrate your ‘value’:
1] Develop success stories with measurable results:
Through these success stories the use your skills will get reflected. Make a note of the ones which are common throughout multiple success stories. These form your core skills. Listing down success stories builds up your confidence as you know what you are delivering (aka value). The results you describe need to be on similar lines as listed above.
2] What is unique about you?
How are you different? What makes you YOU? List down what people often say about you that you do very well. That will help you identify the ‘value’ you deliver. Is your LinkedIn profile positioning you as an expert and ‘go-to’ person in your field? And are you networking accordingly?
3] Communicating with your target audience:
Are you communicating in a strategic and structured manner with the right kind of people who are decision makers & influencers Developing the discipline to keep building value based relationships with people who matter plays an important role in influencing what you get to the table.
So don’t lose sight of the ‘value’ you get to employers and you will find your career keeps progressing well.
Hopefully I have given you some food for thought.
