How To Nail The ‘Why Are You Interested?’ Interview Question

April 2, 2024 | Sarabjeet Sachar |

As a seasoned career development and leadership coach, I’ve encountered countless professionals grappling with one of the most COMMON interview question: “Why are you interested in this job?” It’s a crucial inquiry that can make or break your chances of landing that dream position. Yet, many candidates stumble when articulating their motivations, inadvertently underselling themselves in the process.

Let’s delve into the two contrasting approaches:

Ineffective Approach: “I am not so happy with my current job or it is for better prospects.”

This response falls flat for a simple reason: it fails to showcase the tangible benefits you bring to the table. It only focuses on what you as a candidate gain by joining. Where is the employer’s benefit? It’s essential to remember that job interviews are not just about what the employer can offer you, but also about how you can contribute to their success.

Effective Approach: “I have learnt and evolved a lot in my current company and role because of which I have been delivering results and contributing. Now for learning some new skills and contributing further there is not much scope in my current job. What excited me about the job is this X aspect where I find a direct match because I have done that successfully. Also, Applying my learning to a different platform and environment will help me deliver better results and contribute. Additionally, I see that this Y aspect is going to be a new learning for me and that excites me further.”

Something on these lines as a response can be  a game-changer. It demonstrates a deep understanding of your own skills and experiences, as well as a keen awareness of how they align with the job requirements.

By highlighting your past achievements and expressing enthusiasm for learning and growth opportunities, you position yourself as a valuable asset to the prospective employer.

In essence, the key to acing this question lies in showcasing your passion, expertise and commitment to professional development.

Remember, an effective response not only addresses why you’re interested in the job but also emphasises how your unique skills and experiences can contribute to the company’s success.

So, the next time you find yourself facing this question in a job interview, approach it with confidence and conviction. Show the interviewer why you’re not just the right fit for the job but also an invaluable addition to their team.
