3 Things You Should Never Say When Answering the “Tell Me About Yourself” Interview Question

June 4, 2024 | Sarabjeet Sachar |

As a career coach, I’ve seen many professionals stumble when answering the seemingly simple interview question, “Tell me something about yourself.” Let me offer you some career advice with job interview tips to avoid interview mistakes.

For you to be found job fit, here’s what you should avoid to make a lasting impression:

1. Avoid Traits That Negatively Impact Job Performance

Be mindful of how your traits align with the role you’re applying for. Do not mention any trait or anything that impacts the performance of the role adversely.

For instance, stating, “I’m easy-going and don’t believe in deadlines” can be detrimental, especially if you’re aiming for a project manager position. Such comments signal that you might struggle with the job’s critical responsibilities, leading to immediate disqualification.

2. Don’t Highlight Irrelevant Strengths

While discussing your strengths, ensure they are pertinent to the job requirements for you to be found job fit. Focusing on skills that don’t align with the role can portray you as an unsuitable candidate. For example, emphasizing your public speaking skills for a data analyst position might not be as impactful as highlighting your analytical abilities and attention to detail. So focus on relevant skills which meet the job requirements.

3. Balance Personal Background with Professional Skills

It’s important to create a connection with the interviewer, but overly focusing on your personal and educational background at the expense of your professional skills can be a missed opportunity. Ensure you showcase your relevant experience, professional skills, and how they make you a great fit for the position. This balance helps the interviewer see you as a well-rounded candidate who can bring value to their team.

Remember, your response to “Tell me something about yourself” sets the tone for the rest of the interview. Use these interview techniques and tailor your answer to highlight your strengths and experiences relevant to the job, and you’ll be off to a great start!
